Of course, logic flew out the window the moment you sat down to play a game about an octopus posing as a human. Riotous calamity follows your every tentacle twitch. But in a genuinely funny way that instantly mitigates any control frustrations.
It sounds horrible because it is horrible. Fine motor control is rendered nearly impossible by the fact that Octodad’s limbs return to their natural center when you release the analog stick. The sticks also move Octodad’s grasping “arm” when neither trigger is held down, and the A button (Xbox 360 gamepad) allows you to pick up and drop items with your suction cups. This turns even the act of walking into a laborious process of manually raising a leg, pushing it forward, letting it drop, then repeating that with the other leg– which sometimes get wrapped around or otherwise caught on something. The cumbersome controls at the heart of this adventure are needfully frustrating – you’re flopping around on octopus tentacles, after all – while still being manageable. Developer Young Horses dives deep into the awkward hilarity of telling this bizarre story of an octopus pretending to be a loving human husband and father. If charm alone could carry a game, Octodad: Dadliest Catch would already be a lock for Game of the Year contention. I am sorry if I have been to harsh but these are my opinions.Unexpected difficulty spike in the final act kills the momentum If I had created this game I would be quite proud of myself as most of the time the controls run smoothly and the characters change and develop over time keeping it interesting. I love the shorts and the hidden references to surgeon simulator. Overall, the game is one of my favourite games. I think more levels should be added as it is very expensive. I like the idea of running up the down escalators but it is a bit of a struggle.
I had one more negative point, the escalators going down in the Deep Ocean section of the Aquarium. I countless times have been strangled by the chef with the controls refusing to cooperate when I push them too fast.
Once you change to hand mode, grab the mop, mop up the jam and change back to feet mode you only have a few seconds to run. The jam spillage is a good idea but takes time to mop up. I also think running away from the chef in the Grocery Store is quite hard due to the fact of the jam spillage. Such as climbing the play ground in the Kelp Forest in the Aquarium is extremely hard due to the bouncing and rolling parts trying to knock you off. I rate it 4 stars because the plot/storyline is good but some of the tasks are difficult.
